Exclusive Interview with Gemma Hyslop, Stylist of Urban Outfitters Europe

Here is another woman in menswear world! Gemma Hyslop, menswear & womenswear Stylist at Urban Outfitters Europe, tells us about SS14 menswear trends. This is a womanly chat about male trends including likes & dislikes! J

Can you tell us about yourself?
I am the European stylist for all online imagery for both menswear and womenswear. I basically put all the outfits together for the online product shoots and style all the menswear for our Lookbooks, press days and creative imagery!

What’s the ratio of men to women customers of Urban Outfitters?
We have a smaller menswear based customer compared to our womenswear customers but I would say they are a little older so come to our website or stores for something specific! They know the brands we stock, they know what they like and they come to us specifically for those brands or pieces!

On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you rate men paying attention to their daily styles compared to women?
7 years ago I would of said maybe a 5 but now I think Menswear is so much bigger and more exciting than it has ever been I would say a good 8 or 9. Men are much more aware these days, celebrities, singers and people in the public eye are a lot more style conscious pushing boundaries with fashion so this then filters down to the highstreet.

Do you think runways are reflected on the street?
Yes, more so than ever, people take direct influence from catwalk shows these days and make it work for their own personal style, whether it be head to toe or just certain aspects.

Do you think there is a definite kind of style for the future of men’s fashion?
I don’t think any fashion can be definite as it is ever changing. I do believe men’s fashion will become stronger each year though, there are so many new designers emerging in Menswear at the moment and it is exciting to find out who is going to grow within the industry and who is going to drop off the scene quickly!

"I love men who aren't scared to push the boundaries. I have a lot of respect for a guy who will wear a head to toe printed outfit, you need to be a confident person to carry off certain trends."

Could you also name one person in the public eye whose style you like the most?
I love ASAP Rocky and feel he has pathed the way for making fashion more accessible to the average guy, he has helped to link up fashion and music more in the public eye. I also think Pharrell Willams and Kanye (even though he is a bit of a douch bag) have also done this!

What would be your one piece of advice for men in terms of style and fashion?
Always wear good trainers!

Mountain Man | What To Pack for a Ski Holiday?

Ok. Here is a confession. I like summer but I’m more a winter person. Skiing and snowboarding is as tempting to me as a beach holiday. And sometimes more…
As my favourite time of the year has come (inc Christmas) we can start talking about ski holidays which I will be packing for soon! Hooray! J
Either you are a first timer or a regular skier there are certain things you wouldn’t want missing in your suitcase. Also there is a certain ‘style’ in ski holiday/ski look too.
So here is the ‘suitcase must have list’ for 2014 ski holidays!

PS: according to my surveys, women find men who snowboard very charming.

  1. First things first. Your ski outfit! Besides the specific ski/board trousers, gloves and etc, for a ski/board jacket, Moncler rules!
  2. Thermal socks  & thermal and long sleeved tops for base layers. You will hate yourself if you forget these. Thermal socks and tops are life savers on a ski holiday!
  3. Fleece sweater with a safe pocket for your mobile. DO NOT GO SKIING WITHOUT YOUR MOBILE  – You may get lost… You may also prefer a small rucksack.
  4. Even though it’s not a beach holiday you still have to take your sun care kit with you. The sun can be unforgiving up on the mountain, reflecting off the snow. Lip protection with high SPF, high factor sunscreen and after sun lotion. + Moisturizing
  5. Another summer essential for a winter holiday! Swim suit for sauna, hot tub or pool which is the second greatest time of the day after skiing.
  6. Pills like pain killers, muscle relaxants and something for diarrhea. Trust me!
  7. Casual clothes for the evening, layers are key as hotels and chalets can be warm. I usually prefer going very casual and relax on ski holidays. Enjoy this opportunity! J
  8. Travel Shot Glasses – you know why J
And as a result: Welcome to the BEANIE zone! Here are my picks for a stylish ski holiday inc. beanies, accessories, and jackets.

Let's Go Outside with BEANIES! [Menswear Winter Essential]

I don’t even ask ‘Beanie or not beanie?’. It’s definitely YES BEANIE!
If diamonds are girls’ best friend, beanies are men’s best friends for WINTER! Besides; who doesn't find a guy wearing a beanie attractive???
This is the first reason why you should have one! And the second reason is that they look “cool” and keeps you “warm”. They complete an outfit by adding an effortless final touch no matter if it's a casual look or a formal look.

Men's knitwear is set to become a big trend for winter 2013. As much as statement scarves are on the rise, beanies are in the ‘Must Have’ list too!
As we all see on all magazines, slouchy beanies are celebrities' winter essentials.

It’s also a fact that it’s easier for men to wear beanies and hats as they generally  have shorter hair than women. Even if they have long hair somehow men can style their hair a lot easier than us, women.

So… With this advantage in addition to style, why wouldn't a guy use a beanie, right?

On the other hand when you have a bad hair day, just wear a beanie and leave the house!

They are affordable and small (doesn't take up too much room in your wardrobe ) I think you must have many beanies in many colours and in many styles for your winter wardrobe.

Here are a few that I picked for you.
